Pineapple Packs Powerful Beauty Benefits

June 20, 2019

Everybody knows I’m passionate about packing more fruits and vegetables into our diet, but I’m also an avid follower of beauty and fashion. With all the fantastic benefits of a plate rich in fresh natural products, it can be easy to forget that many of these fruits can be used in our beauty regime to keep us looking revitalized and in top shape.

Pineapple is a delicious addition to many of my raw juices and fruit salads, but it can do so much more. It is high in vitamin C, bromelain, and alpha-hydroxy acids which can all add extra to our daily regime. Here, I’m going to talk you through just three of the beauty benefits of pineapple:

1. Glowing, grease-free skin

With almost eighty percent of our daily recommended intake of vitamin C, and the anti-inflammatory enzyme bromelain, pineapple juice makes an incredible facial treatment, especially for those suffering with greasy or inflamed skin conditions such as acne. Making an exfoliating mask by mixing pineapple pulp with oats, allowing them to stand to absorb the moisture, and then spreading across problem areas. Rinse off after twenty minutes with warm water to encourage pores to open.

The beauty benefits of pineapple in our skincare regime don’t stop there. Pineapple juice helps in the synthesis of collagen, which gradually depletes as we age, leaving us with fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen makes the skin look tighter and fuller, plumping up those frown lines and crow’s feet, making us look fresher and younger. On top of all this, the alpha-hydroxy acids help to balance areas of uneven pigmentation, reducing the appearance of moles, sun spots, and even bruises.

As if that weren’t enough, the acidity of pineapple juice applied to infection-prone skin also helps to prevent those infections. Dabbing a small amount of pulp using a cotton bud onto warts, verrucae or blocked pores, and leaving to dry a least twice a day is a natural way to clear up affected skin.

2. Long, strong hair

Bromelain, the enzyme responsible for the anti-inflammatory properties of pineapple, has the wonderful ability to strengthen hair follicles. Those of you with brittle or thinning hair might see an improvement if using a pineapple-based hair mask during their washing routine. Pineapple is full of many water-soluble vitamins, which are all responsible for maintaining a rich, full head of hair that is strong and resilient to breakages. Adding pineapple into any raw juice blend, or snacking on pineapple chunks a few times a week will also help the body to build up a store of these vitamins, so that hair stays strong and long without any additional harsh chemicals.

3. Sparkling smiles

Increasing the amount of pineapple in your diet isn’t just great from a nutritional point of view. That old friend, bromelain, helps to reduce tooth staining by breaking down plaque build-up and keeping enamel white. It’s easy to think that the acidity of pineapple is detrimental to oral health, but pineapple actually helps to alkalize the mouth, protecting the enamel. Make the most of pineapple’s benefits to oral health by making sure you chew each chunk properly before swallowing!

If you’re one of the many who suffers with gum disease, look no further than pineapple to reduce the inflammation caused by gingivitis. Among others, pineapple contains vitamins C and K, and these promote healing, especially after tooth extractions or dental surgery. In fact, a recent study published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery demonstrated that bromelain-containing compounds are as effective as prescription painkillers at reducing post-operative soreness. Vitamin K is essential for clotting, so plenty of pineapple will also reduce the amount of blood lost during dental procedures. Always check with your physician before starting oral bromelain supplements, as these can interfere with prescription medications and cause medical problems if people have intolerances or particular allergies.

There you have it – three lesser-known benefits of pineapple as part of our beauty regime. Whether it be skin, hair or oral care, let pineapple help you to stay looking your best. It’s delicious and nutritious, but can also help us look the picture of health when used outside of the body.
