6 Tips For Summer Self-Care

Summer 2021 is all about natural beauty and self-love, nourishing yourself from the inside out with seasonal whole foods, and getting Vitamin D to support your immune system and gut health.

These hot months burst of life and fun, it truly is a season of self care and wellness. People often underestimate how refreshing self-care can be for the mind, body and spirit. We should be practicing self-care every day in our daily routine to ensure we don’t miss out on the amazing health benefits of feeling more balanced, centered, and present. What does self-care mean? Essentially it’s taking time out of our day to day life to focus on our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.immune system and gut health.

Your diet, your skincare routine, your workout plan, and of course your self-care practices can be seasonal! Get your custom self-care routine + these 6 summer self-care tips below!

1. Schedule time off

How are you starting your day, week, or month? The morning is a great time for reflection, meditation, affirmation, and prayer. Slow down your busy day and make time for yourself and your needs. Turn off the news, and make time for your gratitude journal. Just one day of rest can help restore your mind, body, and spirit.

2. Spend time outdoors

Spending time outside in nature can be a great way to energize your soul. Try taking a walk through the hills or through the woods. If you live near the coast, take a stroll along the ocean and sink your toes into the warm sand. You can feel rejuvenated simply by sitting in a relaxing environment and quieting your mind and body.

3. Take time to breathe

As it turns out, breathing is not just essential for keeping you alive. If done correctly, it can actually help to lower blood pressure, pulse rate, and stress levels. Take a calming breath, also known as diaphragmatic breathing. This type of deep breathing can help:

  • Release serotonin, the feel-good hormone, into the bloodstream.
    • Cleanse lactic acid, which can heighten feelings of anxiety, from the blood.
    • Increase brain waves, giving you a sense of calm.

4. Exercise daily

Don't stop moving just because you're sweaty! Maybe you've been doing a lot of cardio because of all these outdoor workouts and need to start picking up the weights or doing more HIIT workouts with bodyweight!

Sweating is good for :

  • remove toxins
  • is beneficial for heart health
  • helps your muscles repair by flushing out lactic acid
  • cleans impurities from your skin
  • supports your immune system by helping to rid the body of germs
  • improves your mood

Jogging, swimming, and bicycling are all healthy summer exercises. Exercise isn't just for getting those last winter / quarantine pounds off - it's also important for brain health. A good cardiovascular workout can improve circulation in your brain and promote balanced brain chemistry, and boost your mood.  By keeping cortisol and adrenaline levels in check, exercise can help your stress levels stay stable. Nobody wants to be stressed in the summer!

5. Sleep

Recognizing how much sleep your body needs is a big key to self-care. Sleep patterns can change during the summer since it stays daylight longer and our sleep responses can be delayed. Think back to the last time you didn't get enough sleep - it likely affected your entire day. A lack of sleep can affect our mental health, physical health, relationships, eating habits, productivity, and overall well-being. Remember the importance of a good night's sleep and make sure you're getting enough sleep this summer.

Did you know waking up and getting that early morning reddish sunshine is a natural mood booster! Maybe try catching some summer sunrises!

6. Eat well

There is such a variety of summer foods to choose from! Summer is a great time to incorporate more nutritious foods into your diet. What you put into your body directly affects your well-being and overall health.

Did you know that certain foods can help you produce more melanin in your skin - natural sunscreen! While this natural UV protection shouldn't completely replace your sunscreen routine, it definitely helps! Summer and tropical fruits like guavas, blueberries and oranges are full of antioxidants! In fact, cacao and coffee are rich in antioxidant because they’re grown near the equator where it’s always sunny. Fruits originating from the Middle East and Central Asia like pomegranates, dates and olives are skin-healthy as well! Green tea helps to reduce inflammation, boost the immune system and repair DNA.

SUMMER FOODS TO ADD TO YOUR PLATE -

  • Watermelon
  • Cucumber
  • Mint
  • Green leafy vegetables
  • Onions
  • Melons
  • Just Add Water
  • Celery

Keep these 6 tips in mind when practicing self-care this summer.  The best version of yourself will emerge from how well you take care of your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.
